For TJ, one of the best things about moving down to Dorset is that we now live on the Jurassic Coast. He has been interested in dinosaurs for well over a year now and he has learnt so much – as have we!
Obviously, living on the Jurassic Coast means that there are lots of opportunities nearby to go fossil hunting and one of our favourite places to go is Charmouth. It’s less than an hour’s drive from us, and if you check the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre’s twitter feed , you know when it’s the best time to find fossils according to the tides.
You are able to book fossil hunting tours through the Heritage Coast Centre for a very reasonable cost or you can hire a fossil hammer and protective goggles from the little shop for £10 deposit and £3 hire charge if you want to go it alone. I have to say that it’s quite amusing going to a beach where literally everyone is walking around looking at the ground searching for fossils.
We have a little hammer and some protective eye glasses which we bought from Poundland which do the job and we take along an old paintbrush as well.
We have been a couple of times now and have always managed to find something which is very exciting. Here is our haul from our most recent visit – not bad for amateurs! Looking forward to a return visit soon – hopefully when the weather is a bit better!
